How aftercare works
After you scrape dry paste off, the stain is pale orange. It deepens to maroon over 24–48 hours as the dye oxidises — but water and cold during that window lighten it. Balm
- Thicker, waxier — sits on the skin and stays put for hours.
- Best for: overnight after a bridal application, and through wedding functions with lots of handwashing.
- Comes in Mini (kit / travel / one design) and Regular (a full bridal party) sizes.
- Slightly more effort to apply evenly; a little goes a long way.
Oil
- Lighter — quick to dab on and quick to re-apply.
- Best for: everyday designs, festival hands, topping up through the day, and sealing before you touch water.

The routine, either way
- Scrape the paste off dry — no washing.
- Apply balm (thick, even) or oil (thin layer).
- No water for 12 hours; re-seal before any unavoidable water contact.
- Keep the hand warm — cotton gloves or socks overnight.
- Re-apply each morning for the first day or two.
Mini vs Regular balm
- Mini — travel size, an artist's kit, or one bridal application. Fits in a clutch for touch-ups at the wedding.
- Regular — a full bridal party, a family function, or a household that uses henna often. Better value per gram.
A little balm goes a long way — a pea-sized amount covers a full hand — so don't over-buy if you use henna occasionally.
Do balm and oil expire?
They don't spoil quickly, but natural oils can go rancid over many months, especially in heat. Store them cool and sealed, out of direct sun, and replace if the smell turns sharp or "off". A tin of balm kept sensibly lasts a long time.
A note on skin type
- Dry or mature skin — balm's richer seal is kinder and helps the design look glossy rather than flaky.
- Oily or acne-prone skin — a light oil or a sealant spray may feel better than a heavy balm, especially on the forearms.
- Sensitive skin — pick a fragrance-free option and patch test alongside your henna patch test.
