Bridal Mehndi Timeline: When to Book, Apply & Seal

Bridal mehndi is one of the few wedding elements you literally wear. A little planning is the difference between a deep, even maroon and a patchy orange.

6–8 weeks before

• Book your artist. Good bridal artists in Bangalore fill up months ahead for peak dates.
• Share references for the style you want (Indo-Arabic, Rajasthani, minimal, portrait) and confirm hours, coverage and cost.
• Patch test the exact henna that will be used.

1–2 weeks before

• Finish any waxing, bleaching, tanning or facials on the arms and legs now, not after. Freshly waxed or bleached skin stains unevenly.
• Moisturise daily so skin is healthy — but stop heavy lotions the day before.

2 days before (application day)

• Apply in the morning so the paste can stay on overnight.
• Eat well beforehand and keep water and a straw handy — you won't be using your hands for hours.
• Keep the room warm.

Removing and protecting the stain

1. Scrape the paste off dry the next morning — no washing.
2. No water on the design for 12 hours.
3. Seal with a natural balm or oil; wear cotton gloves/socks to bed if you can.
4. For the functions, dab oil before anything that involves water or handwashing, and avoid sanitiser directly on the design.

Wedding day

The stain should be at its darkest 24–48 hours after removal — right on time. A light re-oil in the morning gives it a subtle sheen for photos.

Why two days before, exactly

Henna keeps oxidising and deepening for 24–48 hours after the paste comes off. Apply the morning two days before the wedding, remove it the next morning, and the colour peaks on the wedding day itself. Apply too early and it's already fading by the reception; apply the day before or the same day and the photos catch a pale orange design. If your functions run over several days, plan around the main event.

What to eat and avoid

• Eat a proper meal before application — you won't use your hands for hours.
• Keep water and a straw within reach.
• Skip facials, waxing, bleaching, tanning and scrubs on the arms and legs for 1–2 weeks before; freshly treated skin stains unevenly.
• Stop heavy hand cream the day before — a clean, oil-free surface stains best.

Protecting the stain through the functions

1. Dab oil or balm on the design before anything involving water — handwashing, the haldi, eating.
2. Keep hand sanitiser off the henna; it lightens fresh stains fast.
3. Cotton gloves to bed the first night or two if you can.
4. Avoid swimming pools (chlorine) and long hot showers on the design.

Feet, not just hands
