How to Price Your Mehndi Work in India (Fairly)
A simple formula for festival, party and bridal rates that covers materials, hours, travel and skill — plus the price bands artists actually charge in Bangalore.

Underpricing is the most common mistake new mehndi artists make, and it's hard to undo — clients anchor to your first quote. This guide gives you a repeatable way to set rates and the current Bangalore price bands to sanity-check them against.
The pricing formula
For any booking, add up four things:
- Materials — cones used, aftercare given, stencils, travel-size consumables. Usually ₹50–₹300 per client.
- Time — design time plus setup, cleanup and waiting. Decide your hourly rate (₹300–₹1,000+ depending on skill) and multiply.
- Travel — fuel/auto plus the hours lost commuting across Bangalore traffic. A flat ₹200–₹800 outside your home area is normal.
- Skill premium — what your portfolio and reputation justify. This grows over time and is where experienced artists make their margin.
Quote = materials + (hours × rate) + travel + skill premium.
Why undercharging hurts you
New artists often quote very low "to build a portfolio." The problem: your first clients tell their friends what they paid, so your low rate becomes your market rate, and raising it later feels like a betrayal to repeat clients. A modest but real beginner price — one that covers materials, time and travel — sets the right anchor and still wins you bookings on the strength of your work. Free or near-free work also attracts clients who don't value the craft and are the hardest to please.

How to package bridal work
- Tiered packages (Essential / Classic / Signature) by coverage make it easy for a bride to choose and upsell herself.
- Charge per hand-length: wrist, mid-forearm, elbow, full arm.
- Include a design consultation, premium natural henna, on-the-day touch-ups and written aftercare. Clients pay more when they can see what's included.
- Trial: ₹800–₹2,000, adjustable against the final package.
Worked example
A party booking in Koramangala: detailed design on one side of both hands, 45 minutes of work, 25 minutes travel each way, two cones and an aftercare sample used.
- Materials: ₹120
- Time: 45 min design + ~50 min travel ≈ 1.6 hrs × ₹500 = ₹800
- Travel fee: ₹250
- Skill premium (2 years' experience, strong portfolio): ₹300
- Quote ≈ ₹1,470, rounded to ₹1,500.
A beginner doing the same job might quote ₹500–₹700 by using a lower hourly rate and no skill premium — still not free, still covering costs.
Deposits, cancellations and no-shows
- Take a 30–50% advance by UPI to hold any date; the balance on completion.
- State a cancellation policy: advance is non-refundable inside 7 days, or transferable to a new date once.
- For bridal, put the date, coverage, arm length, start time, hours and total in a written message both sides keep.
- Charge a rush fee (25–50%) for bookings inside 48 hours during peak season.
Raising your rates
Review pricing every three to four months in your first two years. Raise when: your speed improves, your portfolio strengthens, you're booked out, or your costs rise. Tell existing clients in advance; new quotes just use the new number. A useful signal: if you're turning down fewer than one in five enquiries in peak season, you're priced too low.
What clients are really paying for
Two artists can quote the same number and deliver very different value. Beyond the design, clients are paying for: showing up on time, finishing within the promised hours, henna that stains dark and safe, calm handling of a nervous bride, touch-ups without fuss, and a backup plan if you fall ill. Build those in and you can hold your rates while others discount.
Protect yourself
- Take a 30–50% advance to hold a date.
- Put coverage, hours, travel and cancellation terms in writing (a WhatsApp message is fine).

Handling the "that's expensive" conversation
You'll hear it. Don't discount on the spot. Instead, explain what's included — premium natural henna, the hours it takes, travel, touch-ups, aftercare support — and offer a smaller package (hands only instead of hands and feet) rather than the same work for less money. Clients who still walk were never going to be happy clients. The ones who book after that conversation respect the price and refer others at it.
