Covering grey is the single most common reason people switch to henna, and it works — but the result depends entirely on which method you use. Here's what to expect and how to get even, lasting coverage.
Natural henna covers grey hair by coating each strand with lawsone dye, which binds permanently to the hair's keratin. The two-step method for brown/black grey coverage
Step 1 — Henna
- Mix body-art-quality henna with warm water (or weak tea) to a yoghurt consistency. Rest it 30 minutes to a few hours until it releases dye.
- Section clean, dry hair and apply root to tip with a brush and gloves, packing it on thickly at the greys.
- Wrap the head in cling film and a warm towel. Grey hair is resistant — leave it 2–3 hours.
- Rinse with water only (no shampoo) until it runs clear. Your hair will look coppery — that's expected.
Step 2 — Indigo (same day or next day)
- Mix indigo powder with warm water fresh — it has a short active window, so use it within 15–20 minutes.
- Apply over the henna-treated hair, wrap, and leave 45–90 minutes.
- Rinse with water, and don't shampoo for 24–48 hours so the colour can set.

Do a strand test first — take a few greys from your brush, run the full process, and check the colour before committing. This also serves as your safety patch test.
Timing and maintenance
- First full application: roots and lengths, so everything matches.
- Root touch-ups: every 3–4 weeks on the regrowth only. Overlap slightly onto old henna; it won't build up unevenly the way box dye does.
- Refresh the lengths 2–4 times a year if the ends look faded.

Why henna suits grey hair
Grey hair is often coarse, wiry and dry. Does henna fully cover grey hair?
Pure henna coats grey hair with a strong copper-red that is opaque but not "natural brown" on its own. For brown or black coverage you apply henna first, then indigo (a two-step process). The grey is fully covered either way — the question is the final shade.
How long do I leave henna on for grey coverage?
For stubborn or coarse grey, 2–3 hours. Greys have a smoother cuticle and take longer to accept the dye than pigmented hair. Keep the head warm and wrapped throughout.
